What We Purchase FAQ

Do you purchase comics?
**Update** We are NOT purchasing Comic Book Collections right now.

Yes we do, from time to time. Please call us at 262-544-2008 before bringing in your collection to make sure we are buying at the time. Before you call, please have an idea of what books you have in your collection: some titles or characters, issue numbers or years published are all helpful. Also know approximately how many comics you are selling.

Is there a day or time you look at comics?
If you have a collection you want to sell, we can take a look at them Monday, Tuesday, Thursday or Friday. These are the only days we accept collections, so please do not bring your collection by on days other than these listed. You can bring them in between 11 am and 7 pm on these days.

Will you buy all of my comics or only certain ones?
We purchase entire collections. If you only have a few comics, we will probably not buy them. However, if you have a box or several boxes of comics we will buy the entire collection from you and not pick through them taking out the good ones and leaving you the rest. We usually won't buy collections that consist primarily of comics printed in the early 1990's, especially if they do not feature major characters like Superman, Batman, X-Men, Captain America and the like.

Is there a minimum or maximum number of comics you buy?
If you only have a few comics, we will probably not buy them. A good starting number would be about 100 comics. The exception to this would be if you have comics from the 1950's or earlier. In this case we would look at any quantity of comics you are looking to sell. As far as a maximum, if you have a substantial collection and are looking to liquidate it, you should give us a call. There are times when we invest in large collections like this, but usually only once or twice a year. In these cases, where the collection is substantial, we can evaluate the collection at its current location instead of having you drive them out to us.

What will you give me for my comics?
We cannot give anyone a quote over the phone. The only way we can price a collection is to look at it. Prices for comics very greatly and we won't provide any prices without seeing the comic book. Remember that we buy the collection so that we can resell it and earn a profit. Usually for Marvel and DC comics we pay $.15 (fifteen cents)cash or $.22 (twenty-two cents) in-store credit each, on modern books (1980-current) and these must be near mint. If you see prices on comics at another store, in a magazine or on a web-site, the prices you see are prices we'd like to be able to get when we sell them, they are not the prices we will give you when we buy them. But, if you do have an idea of what you'd like to get for your collection, please let us know. The best way to earn top-dollar on your comics is to sell them to individual collectors and not to comic book stores like ours. However, it is a lot of work. The best way to earn money quickly on your comics is to sell them to a comic book store.

Wizard magazine shows my Ultra-Cool Super-Hero #1 comic book is $10, why are you offering me so much less?
The first thing it's important to understand is: when you have looked up your copy of Ultra-Cool Super-Hero #1, and found it listed in Wizard or the Overstreet Guide as being worth $10.00 in NM (Near Mint) condition, don't expect a dealer to pay you that for it. That's what a dealer will be able to sell that item for. All buyers look at the price guide, and see what the book is valued at, and do not plan to pay more than guide for any book. In fact, buyers of the comic want a good deal, so they want to get it for less than $10. In our store, we sell most for 50% of that guide price, so that would be $5 for that $10 book. Now we need to make a profit on it too, so we need to buy it from you for less than the $5.

Another thing is demand - how hot is the book or character featured? If Ultra-Cool Super-Hero has just been the subject of a summer blockbuster movie, chances are, the comic will also be in hot demand. If Ultra-Cool Super-Hero's heyday was really something like 10 or 12 years ago and he hasn't done much since, you may remember it fondly, but most of today's crop of collectors (A) already has it, read it, wore the t-shirt, or (B) doesn't remember it and couldn't care less. Please don't become insulted when you cart your books over to a store and a dealer offers you 15-50% of what you thought you could get. That store owner needs to get the books at a low enough price to be able to wait for someone else to become interested and buy them - for more than they paid for them - and usually, one at a time.

You may think a comics dealer is ripping you off by not giving you guide price for your books, but the truth is, you're getting off easy. You have money in your pocket, a clean space in your garage or closet, and you have the time to go to the movie with your friends. The dealer will then spend an average of $100 worth of time and effort to sell enough comics from the long box s/he bought from you before s/he has any money to show for his or her efforts.

Will you take this old junk?
When you do decide to sell your books or other items to a store owner, here are some tips to help you get treated right: To get the best deal on your collections from a dealer, don't treat your books like trash. Many times, people have come in, excitedly telling us all about all the #1 issues they have of some books from a few years back. They say they spent beaucoup bucks buying them up, then they inform us that now, they "just want to get rid of them." Please understand that we are not a dumping ground for your old stuff. As I've outlined here, some comics aren't valuable collectibles - they're just old recyclable paper with pictures on it.

Second, when you're trying to get a good price for something, it's better if the prospective buyer feels these books are meaningful to you. When you come in with the attitude that these books are "taking up space" or that you "really don't want them any more," the person you're trying to sell them to doesn't attach more value to them than you do - and basically, you've just told the dealer that these are just your old trash that you no longer care about. If it's junk to you, do you think a dealer is going to feel different? Have them in a nice box, and preferably bagged and boarded so that the dealer sees them as being in better condition than a stack of loose books dragged in under your arm with ripped and curled covers.

Third, keep in mind that "old" to a comics collector is usually 50 or more years, not 10 - 12 years - those are still technically modern books, and often have very little value or interest to real collectors. When you approach a dealer or even a collector and declare that you have old books, and then show him/her copies of Ultra-Cool Super-Hero from 1995, he/she will look disappointed and tell you that your books are not valuable because they are too new and too plentiful, and frankly, most of them are worthless- and that we already have loads just like them in the discount bin.

Finally, as already explained, when you're looking to cash in and get top dollar on an investment you made many years ago, you're far better off to try to sell to private parties than to a dealer, as we (and any other dealer) will only pay pennies on the dollar of any item's value - it's simple economics: we have to be compensated for the cost of purchasing your book, preparing your book for sale, and the amount of time your old book will sit in our store (in other words, now it's our turn to store your old books), and we must make a profit when the item does finally sell.

I don't want to sell this, but can you tell me how much it's worth?
We offer a comic book appraisal service and charge $75 per hour to value your collection. If you have a book or two, and we're not busy, we might be able to give you a price in the store for free, but we cannot give any prices over the phone.

Other Items

We do buy a few items other than comic books. Read below to find out what.

Is there anything you don't buy?
Currently we do not buy toys or cards of any kind. We do not buy CD's, records, VHS movies, used games, magazines, encyclopedias, or adult materials. While we do sell new computer and video console games on a pre-order basis, we are not currently buying or selling used computer, video or console games or game systems. Again, just give us a quick call at 262-544-2008 and give us an idea of what you have to sell and we can tell you quickly if we're interested in taking a look at it or not.

I have some old books, but they are not comics, will you buy them?
On occassion we will buy science fiction and fantasy novels in good condition. Prices vary, but for most soft-cover novels in good condition we will pay $.25 (twenty-five cents) cash or $.40 (fourty cents)in-store credit per book.

I see you sell DVD's, will you buy them?
On occassion we will buy DVD movies and tv-series collections in good condition. Most are $2 (two dollars) cash or $3 (three dollars) in-store credit per disk (so if you bring in a tv-series collection that contains 4 disks, you could get $8-$12). This is mainly for newer items that are mint and in the original cases. If we examine your disks and they appear damaged or scratched we won't buy them. We won't buy any anime DVD's or any pornographic material.

Do you buy toys or statues?
We don't buy toys or action figures at this time. On occasion we will buy statues and mini-busts. Prices of these will depend upon: the size, the age, what character the statue or mini-bust is of, the condition, if the box and interior packaging are included, and what artist and manufacturer made the item. We only buy "limited run" items and will not buy anything that appears to have been altered after purchase.

What is in-store credit?
While we do pay cash for items, we prefer to give you in-store credit. This is basically money that you can only use here at Neptune Comics. You can use it all at once, or over time, and it does not expire. We put it on a card for you, so it is easy to keep track of.

Used Graphic Novels
You can get in-store credit or cash for used graphic novels in good condition. Generally we buy these on-the-spot. On occasion we will also buy Japanese Manga. Prices vary depending upon condition and how new or old they are. We usually won't spend more than $5 (five dollars) each for any graphic novel unless it is an Absolute edition or Omnibus. We won't spend more than $1 (one dollar) each for mint condition, newer manga. Most manga will be purchased for prices similar to novels (see above).

Comic Collection Appraisals
We are now offering a collection appraisal service. If you have a collection of comics and are interested in knowing its value, for whatever reason, we will gladly appraise the collection for you. Collections must be brought into the store; we do not make house calls. We charge by the hour for this service, and can give you an estimate on the cost based on the quantity of books you would like apprised. Fifty percent down, based on the estimate, is required before we begin the appraisal, and the remainder upon completion. This service is separate from the grading service, so our estimates of condition are not as exact as CGC, or another official grading service would be, however we will be able to give you a good estimate of the value of your comic book collection.
